Exploring Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and Hang Mua – July 30, 2025

Anna and Bello kicked off their 2-day Ninh Binh adventure on July 30th with a scenic drive from Hanoi, arriving eager to explore! Our first stop was Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital from the 10th century, where we soaked in its rich history. We visited the Temple of King Dinh Tien Hoang, a stunning 17th-century wood-and-stone masterpiece at Ma Yen Mountain, and the nearby Temple of King Le Dai Hanh, both offering a glimpse into the Dinh and early Le dynasties’ power.

The strategic limestone mountains and rivers that once protected the capital still impress, and we loved the peaceful vibe at Nhat Tru Pagoda and the Four Sacred Temples. Spring’s the best time for festivals, but any season works for this history buff’s paradise!

Next, we conquered Hang Mua (Mua Caves), climbing 500 stone steps to the Ngoa Long Mountain peak for a breathtaking view of the rice paddies and Ngo Dong River, Anna said it felt like a living painting! After lunch, we hopped on a boat through Tam Coc, gliding past the majestic Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba caves. Anna noted the natural beauty rivaled Ha Long Bay, and we learned about the area’s role in fighting invaders, such a cool history lesson!

The day ended with a cozy stay in a bungalow in Koi Tam Coc that Anna raved about from a prior trip, “so warm and welcoming, with the host cooking delicious meals for us, super thoughtful!” We even snapped pics by the lotus pond nearby.
